What better way to profess our family mantra, “Never Say Someday,” than on our very own adventure flag? We recently partnered with Kate Stirling at Expedition Flag Co. to create our own banner to celebrate our adventures and record our achievements. Isn’t it rad?!
After chatting with Kate online, I became curious as to how her family decided to develop this cool new business. What I quickly discovered is that her family seeks adventure just like ours! Kate and her husband Max met as river guides working on the Green and Colorado Rivers in college. They have four sons ages 15, 13, 11, 7 and love to raft, hike, bike and ski.
Max came up with the idea for a family flag after reading several biographies of explorers and learning about the elite groups called the Explorer’s Club. They have a flag that has been taken to the North and South Poles, all kind of first ascents, and even the moon! Max thought his own family should have a flag to record and commemorate their adventures together. As they looked for ways to do it, the couple didn’t find anything they were especially drawn to — so they decided to create it! Kate and Max opened Expedition Flag Co. for business in November 2019 and have loved making flags for people.
“I really feel so happy as I press the images and think of where the flag might go and the people who will call it their own. Our biggest hope is that our flags help bring families and friends together, and encourages them to explore our amazing planet.”
Kate Stirling, Co-Owner of Expedition Flag Co.
The flags are lightweight and come in a cute carrying pouch, which makes it great for packing along on adventures. We recently took our family flag on a hike to Harper’s Corner in Dinosaur National Monument to snap a photo once we made it to our adventure destination. Check out those views! ?
Another purpose of the flag is to record your adventures. The Stirlings like to collect patches or pins from places they visit — national parks, for example — then they hang the flag on their wall at home. It’s both a reminder of the fun stuff they’ve done together and it makes them excited to add more adventures to it.
Expedition Flag Co. has ready-made designs that you can personalize, or, like with ours, they can put any logo, quote, design or photo on an Expedition Flag. The flags are 24″ x 36″ and they’re able print up to about 12″ x 19″ either vertically or horizontally.
I love that we’ve partnered with a small, family business, as we’re always advocating for others to follow their dreams. Kate’s boys help her with the packaging and the shipping. They are the ones holding the flags on their website too! Her 13-year-old son even used his middle school design class skills to help design the “summits” logo on their site. And if you have any questions about the process or your order, you’ll get quick and friendly customer service directly from Kate herself. We loved working with her!
While we’re not ready to settle down just yet, when we do, we have plans to frame our family flag and let it serve as a reminder to keep following our dreams!
