Our Family-Friendly Week in Paradise: Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

    January 19, 2019

Over the past few years, Steven and I have consistently taken vacations in late December/early January. I can’t quite recall how we stumbled upon doing so, but after our first “winter” trip to Xcarat years ago, we have made it a tradition of sorts. While we live in a pretty mellow area as far as weather goes – basically some fog, wind or rain – there’s something about packing your bags and heading towards warmer weather. Our goal: do a whole lotta nothing! Usually, we’re drawn to Mexico. It’s easy to get to from California, and has a ton to offer in terms of food, culture, vibrancy and beauty. We…

🫶🏼 Living (RV) life on our terms
🚐 6+ years of full-time travel
⛺️ Built our dream camp in Baja @CampCerritos

LA VIDA ÚLTIMAMENTE ✨ Pinching myself that this i LA VIDA ÚLTIMAMENTE ✨ Pinching myself that this is our life and that we get to live in such a beautiful and special place. The simplest little moments that add up to a life well lived. Sentirse agradecida. 🙏🏼
✨DREAM BIG✨ It’s WILD to look back three years ag ✨DREAM BIG✨ It’s WILD to look back three years ago at that half-acre lot, so thick with desert brush and pokies that we could barely walk into the property six feet. What we did know — we could see the ocean, the hacienda, some amazing cacti on the land and beautiful hills behind it — and it just felt right. Six months later we were back in Baja, not exploring the peninsula like usual. This time we were buckling down, breaking ground, drawing plans, lining the dirt with chalk, erasing plans, staying up late, brainstorming, and repeating the process. We brought in locals from Pescadero to help with the construction, with Steven serving as the project manager and the oversight. As the visionary and chief of aesthetics, I quickly was dubbed “La Jefa” by the crew. 😂 Steven and his right-hand man Raul, along with our crews, worked over the next nine months to get camp in an operational state so we could open for the 2024/2025 season. And when we did, we never could have imagined the reception we received from the RV, van life and overlanding community. We had made something special. As a full-time travel family, it was important to us that this place have all the makings of a campground WE would love. Ample space. A beautiful communal area. A clean restroom and a hot shower (Baja travelers… IYKYK). Fast WiFi. And most importantly, good vibes. You know… if you build it, they will come. And we’ve seen that over the past two seasons. 🤎 All that’s to say: if you’ve got a dream, go for it. Life’s too damn short to sit on the sidelines and wonder “what if.” And if part of that dream is coming down to Baja in an RV, van or truck camper — we’ll save you a spot in Cerritos. 😉 ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! There’s so much to be gratefu HAPPY THANKSGIVING! There’s so much to be grateful for this year: my family, our health, good friends, a new career, our second year of a successful business — all while living in paradise. After a hard few years, we have so much gratitude for the good in our lives. And while we’ve stepped back a bit from the socials, we’re still so thankful for this community. I wish you and yours nothing but the best this Thanksgiving!
THIS IS 4️⃣0️⃣! 🥳🎂🎉 Wishing the HAPPIEST of birth THIS IS 4️⃣0️⃣! 🥳🎂🎉 Wishing the HAPPIEST of birthdays to the love of my life, my best friend, my rock, my ride or die, and the best dad to our kids. I am so incredibly grateful I got to meet you in your last few months as a 20-year-old, and here we are celebrating you 20 years later. WILD! My life is infinitely better because of you, and I’ll never stop pushing you to celebrate every trip around the sun because it’s another year that you’re mine. 😍 Thank you for everything you do for our family, the tireless work you put in, the dreams you continue to help us realize every day and for loving each of us unconditionally. The kids and I love you so so so much. Happy birthday, my love! 😘 P.S. Thank you for also bringing home all the sashimi a girl could eat today!!! 😋
THIRTEEN 1️⃣3️⃣ It’s official — we have a teenage THIRTEEN 1️⃣3️⃣ It’s official — we have a teenager in our home! How the heck did we get here? It feels like we blinked and our oldest son went from crawling to looking us in the eye overnight. Parenthood is wild, y’all. To Levi: Happy birthday, kiddo! Welcome to your teenage years. You have so much life ahead of you, and we’re proud of the young man you’re becoming. One thing that has always remained since you were little is your heart, that infectious laugh, your sense of humor and your knack for leadership (ok, that’s four but who’s counting!). You make us proud to be your parents every day (especially when you do the dishes unprompted!). We’re excited for your 13th trip around the sun, and can’t wait to see what this year brings you. Always be true to yourself, and kind to others. Dream big and live life unabashedly. We love you to the moon and back! 🌙
CARPE DIEM 💫 Sounds cliche, right? Tell that to CARPE DIEM 💫 Sounds cliche, right? Tell that to the cancer patient fighting for their life in the hospital. Or to the parent whose kids are grown — realizing they spent more time at work than at the dinner table. Say it to the friend who never took the trip, never chased the dream, and now physically can’t. There’s a moment you don’t feel when it happens — the quiet shift from “I still have time” to “I thought I had more.” We all assume there’s more coming: more chances, more tomorrows, more time to start living the way we want. But time doesn’t tap you on the shoulder. It just keeps moving. That’s why we stopped waiting for the right moment. We didn’t wait for “retirement age,” whatever the hell that means. We took the leap of faith and said RIGHT NOW. While we’re still young and our children are in their formative years. We made that decision six years ago, and while some things have changed for us, we still live by our ethos: Never say someday. Simplify. Downsize. Do things that make your heart happy, not what satisfies society’s expectations. Whatever that looks like for you. Live the life YOU want to live. You only have one… make the most of it. 🤙🏽 •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

WHERE WE STAYED IN CDMX 🏙️🇲🇽👏🏽 This past month we WHERE WE STAYED IN CDMX 🏙️🇲🇽👏🏽 This past month we traded RV life for big city living, moving into this super cute Airbnb apartment in Mexico City! For our family of four (plus Frankie 🐾), it was nice to spread our wings, try something new and enjoy an abundance of extra space! If you’re planning on visiting CDMX, we highly recommend staying in La Condesa neighborhood. You can’t beat the tree-lined streets, nearby parks, dog- and family-friendly vibes as well as the multitude of cafes and restaurants! While we miss our Airstream and camp life, not gonna lie… it’s going to be hard to transition back to tiny living! Thankfully we’ve extended our Mexico City trip by another week and are moving to yet another Airbnb today! 😉 What’s your preferred vibe: RV camping out in the wild or big city living? •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

TWO WEEKS IN CDMX 🇲🇽 Well it’s official… we’re in TWO WEEKS IN CDMX 🇲🇽 Well it’s official… we’re in love with Mexico City! 😍 This beautiful, tree-lined city has so much to offer — from the markets to the museums, the street food to the bougie restaurants. CDMX is definitely a vibe. 📌 SAVE THIS POST for your future trip! 📌 Our second week found me balancing work and exploration, with Steven and the kids leaning towards the latter. Some of the highlights: 🏛️ Centro Histórico, where you can take in the city’s cultural and historical heart, built on the ruins of the ancient Aztec city of Tenochtitlán. 🚠 The Cablebús, an urban gondola system that serves as efficient public transportation, providing panoramic views and improving access to neighborhoods. 🎟️ The museum Papalote Museo del Niño, located in Mexico City Bosques de Chapultepec, which is focused in learning, communication and working together through interactive expositions of science, technology and art for kids. 🥭 Condesa Tianguis, a street market hosted every Tuesday where you can find fresh produce, aromatic flowers, tacos, clothing and more. 🦖 The Museo de Historia Natural offers exhibitions from the natural world, including fossils, meteorites, taxidermy animals & insects. 🌮 The food scene! We have stuffed our faces with some of the most delicious comida while here. Our faves were @taqueriaorinoco, @niri_go, Tacos El Cocuyos, @yellow_monkey_group, @elcalifa_mx and @100pesosburger. 📚 We’ve been to a few bookstores, but our fave was this little gem called @antonia_libreria. Which of these spots would be first on your CDMX travel list? •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

ONE WEEK IN CDMX 🇲🇽 We’ve officially been in Mexi ONE WEEK IN CDMX 🇲🇽 We’ve officially been in Mexico City for seven days, and so far it has been an incredible trip! Most of our time has been spent exploring our neighborhood and surrounding areas, much of which has been done by foot. We toured the Museo de Nacional Anthropología, got Frankie into doggy daycare, have eaten to our heart’s content, and obsessed over the daily evening thunderstorms. And as the boys are older now, this has already been such an amazing experience to share with them! For our daily adventures, be sure to watch our stories! 🫶🏽 •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

I am LOVING the early evening storms that roll in like my own personal Calm soundtrack. 🙌🏽 (For the record, the daytime temps in CDMX have been absolutely lovely… low 70s. It definitely feels more like Fall here!) Does this surprise you about either location? Which is more your vibe? •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

CUIDAD DE MEXICO 🇲🇽 We’re officially on our new CUIDAD DE MEXICO 🇲🇽 We’re officially on our new adventure — spending one month living and exploring Mexico City! This place has been on our bucket list for awhile now, and after spending most of this year in Baja, it was a super easy (and affordable) flight from Cabo. Our first full 24 hours was everything we had hoped for too. We’re staying in a super cute Airbnb apartment in La Condesa, a hip neighborhood filled with tons of culinary gems. (Stay tuned for an Airbnb post later!) We walked all over, grabbed groceries and ate some delicious street food. It may sound crazy to say after only being here a day, but we can see why Mexico City is so highly favored by travelers. This city has already become a highlight in our six years of travels! Have you been to CDMX before? If so, drop your recommendations for us. And if not, what questions do you have about Mexico City that we can help answer? •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Building a campground from nothing but raw terrain isn’t for the faint of heart, but after welcoming so many amazing people here, it has all been worth it. To have such a beautiful rainbow and sunset on our last night — on 8/8 no less — feels like a sign that after a year of hard work and dedication, the universe is celebrating this next season of life with us. ✨ •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

VIDA EN BAJA 🇲🇽🌵🌊 It’s hard to believe that we’re VIDA EN BAJA 🇲🇽🌵🌊 It’s hard to believe that we’re wrapping up to leave Baja for the rest of summer after spending most of the year here! We led an awesome RV caravan in January, then headed south to Cerritos where we spent time with our amigos, enjoyed the beautiful weather and worked hard to continue making @CampCerritos our dream spot for not only us, but our guests. We had such a busy seven months with work, homeschool and social gatherings that I hadn’t gotten the chance to share some of those memories to the grid! We’re excited for the next adventure… and we leave in one week! Any guesses as to where we might be headed? •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

OPT OUTSIDE 🌿 Is your feed bombarded with influen OPT OUTSIDE 🌿 Is your feed bombarded with influencer ads hawking a bunch of random 💩 that no one *REALLY* needs? Mine too. And you know what? You don’t need it. None of that garbage is gonna make you happier, or more fulfilled. It’s not going to be the *thing* that finally adds joy to your life. It’s just gonna be one more thing to take care of, or find a place to store amongst the other careless purchases made before. You know what does bring joy though? Getting outside! Going for a walk, a hike, a paddle. Lying in a hammock with a good book. (Need a rec? I’ve got a ton!) Adding some new beauties to your garden. Taking a quick road trip to your nearby state or national park to explore. Planning a camping trip before summer ends. Roasting s’mores with your kiddos. Because the one thing I’ve learned in the past six years of saying 🙅🏼‍♀️ to society’s expectations of me, is that: Experiences > things Memories > Cardboard box deliveries Who’s removing items in the cart for quality time outside instead? •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

NOCHES DE VERANO 🇲🇽 It’s that time of the year ag NOCHES DE VERANO 🇲🇽 It’s that time of the year again, when the weather starts to warm up and the locals are ready to fiesta! Last night we attended the Fresa y Chile Festival in El Pescadero, which is basically the community’s version of the town fair. We love it for the culture, the variety in food, games and questionable rides! 😂 As we come to our last month here for the season, we’re full of so much gratitude for this tiny little place off the beaten path, and for the friends who’ve become family along the way. In a world that feels daunting and full of unknowns, this corner of Earth and the slow, steady pace of life it brings is so appreciated. I hope at some point, you all can visit us here and see why we love it so much. ❤️
